Storytellers
NFRP World adds three storytellers who know about ninja: missions, ranks, rivals, the Bingo Book, the truce and the war between the villages. Pick one on the storyteller page when you start a new game (or change it later in the storyteller settings). Each plays like a vanilla storyteller underneath, so everything vanilla and your other mods add still happens.
In short
Three storytellers who know about ninja (Hisame, Genkō, Kitsunebi), built on Cassandra, Phoebe and Randy. Your renown sets the pace, a ninja calendar brings festivals, exams and missions, and story arcs play out over weeks.
| Storyteller | Plays like | In short |
|---|---|---|
| Hisame the Chronicler | Cassandra Classic | A story with a shape: a calm first year, then rising arcs and, once the truce ends, war. |
| Old Sensei Genkō | Phoebe Chillax | Long peaceful stretches with more training, festivals, masters and missions; trouble one thing at a time. |
| Kitsunebi the Trickster | Randy Random | Twists at any moment: ambushes, spies, smugglers, sudden festivals. |
What they do differently
- Your fame sets the pace. A quiet, unknown village is left alone more: some outside threats pass it by. As your village's renown grows, story arcs come faster and bounty hunters take more interest. (How hard raids hit already follows renown and wealth for every storyteller.)
- Ninja stories instead of generic ones early on. Mech clusters, manhunter packs, infestations and crashed ship parts are rare in the first months. When one would come, a rogue ninja raid or a monster incursion often comes instead.
- A ninja calendar.
- Festivals (lantern, harvest moon, first snow, kites and more): a mood lift and a lot of recreation for everyone.
- Exams: the chūnin exam and the rank exam come round regularly once you have ninja.
- Mission offers come in quiet seasons, when nothing big has hit you for a while.
- War: after the one-year truce ends, the villages' war reaches you on a steady rhythm.
- Story arcs that play out over weeks, one at a time, with room to breathe between them:
- A rival returns with a grudge (sometimes alone, for a duel). If they get away again, a scout traces them to their camp, which you can raid.
- Bounty hunters come for your most famous wanted ninja.
- A deserter from another village asks to join you. A week or two later their village sends hunter-nin after them, unless that village is your ally. Sometimes the deserter was a spy all along.
- Rogue ninja with no village pick you as easy prey.
- Summon beasts gone wild roam into your land.
- Smugglers: a Black Ink courier dumps a stash of silver and goods near your village. Black Ink comes back for it a few days later.
- A wandering master visits to teach (the Old Sensei's favourite).
- New since update 286:
- Squad requests. Some quiet-season offers are a friendly village asking for a squad of a set rank, for a named task. The letter has a Choose the squad button that opens the send window already filled in. Send a squad of that rank or harder for them in time and they pay extra silver if the mission succeeds (plus a little goodwill).
- Moments of insight. Now and then a ninja with room for a signature technique gets an inspiration out of the blue: three ideas to pick from. Festivals and wandering masters can inspire someone too.
- Rivals train while away. A returning rival may bring a signature technique of their own. You only learn what it is once you see it used.
- The smuggler's stash now also holds ninja tools (kunai, senbon, smoke and paper bombs) and sometimes a shinobi weapon.
- No ninja yet? The ninja-only events (exams, rivals) wait, deserters come more often (they bring you a ninja), and everything vanilla carries on as usual.
- The truce: rivals, bounty hunters and Black Ink don't come during the truce. Hunter-nin chasing a deserter are the exception, as always.
