Diplomacy and scroll trading

In short

Call a village on the comms console or field radio to request a squad, buy a scroll or send a gift. At goodwill 60 you can swear to one village for cheaper scrolls and more missions; leaving it makes your ranked ninja missing-nin and brings hunter-nin.

Talking to the villages

Call a hidden village on the comms console (or the field radio, which needs no power: research Ninja gadgets, then build it from the Misc tab) and, as long as they aren't hostile, you get three extra options:

  • Request a ninja squad: a squad of their ninja comes to help. Needs goodwill 40 and costs 25 goodwill.
  • Buy a technique scroll: a runner from the village brings the scroll. The better your relations, the higher the rank on offer: up to D rank for 150 silver, C rank for 300 (goodwill 40) or B rank for 600 (goodwill 75).
  • Send a gift: 500 silver for +12 goodwill.

Silver has to be near a trade beacon, as with any comms trade.

Village standing and permits

With Royalty, honor with a village earns your colonists standing there. Ninja ranks (genin, chūnin and so on) are earned at the rank exam; standing is something else: how much a village trusts an outsider. Honor comes from missions the village gives (choose it as the reward) and from its quests.

Hidden villages (Haigakure, Nagisagakure, Sajingakure, Kaedegakure, Otowagakure, Tetsugakure, and World of Naruto's village):

Friend of the Village61
Sworn Ally62

Honored Elder202

Samurai houses (Akagane, Shiranami, Kurogane): Guest of the House, Friend of the House, Sworn Vassal, House Retainer, Steward, House Elder, Honored Lord, with the same honor and points.

With our villages and houses, standing comes as soon as the honor is there: no ceremony, and no demands for clothes or rooms. World of Naruto's village keeps its own ceremony and clothing demands. Spend permit points on the Permits tab.

Each hidden village's permits:

  • Sworn Ally: the village's own goods (Haigakure fire bombs and chakra paper, Nagisagakure travel food and medicine, Sajingakure salt and smoke bombs, Kaedegakure healing herbs, Otowagakure shriek bombs, Tetsugakure steel and darksteel); ninja tools (shuriken, kunai, smoke bombs).
  • Retainer: field medicine (soldier pills, chakra potions, herbal medicine); a genin squad (4).
  • Envoy: a chūnin squad (4).
  • Councillor: a jōnin squad (3); the village archive request: one technique scroll, mostly B or A rank, sometimes S, and very rarely a forbidden scroll as well (8%).
  • Honored Elder: ANBU (4) from Haigakure, Nagisagakure and Sajingakure; the village guard (5 jōnin) from the others.

A village courier body-flickers in with supplies, and squads appear beside the spot you pick in a puff of smoke: nothing comes by drop pod.

Each samurai house's permits: the house's goods (Akagane rice and silver, Shiranami recurve bows and food, Kurogane steel and darksteel), field provisions, ashigaru (5), the house armory (an excellent katana, or an excellent great bow from Shiranami), samurai (4), bannermen (3 hatamoto), a war chest (300 silver) and, at Honored Lord, veteran samurai (4). A runner brings the goods; the soldiers march in from the map edge.

World of Naruto's village: its Kage scroll permit is now the village archive request too, its Jōnin squad costs 9 honor, its squads body-flicker in, and the orbital trade permit is gone. Its supply drops still come by drop pod.

Joining a village

With goodwill 60 or more you can swear your ninja to one of the six hidden villages from the comms console or field radio. Only one village at a time.

  • Each of your ninja on the map receives the village's headband, brought by a runner.
  • The village's scrolls cost 30% less and go up to B rank. When a jōnin or the village leader does the talking, they go up to A rank (840 silver with the sworn discount).
  • It offers ranked missions three times as often.
  • Every rank one of your ninja earns raises the village's goodwill (+2 for genin up to +8 for village leader).
  • It hosts your genin at the chūnin exam.

Leaving costs 60 goodwill with that village. Every ranked ninja becomes missing-nin for 60 days (less social impact) and feels they abandoned their village for a while. You can't swear to another village for 30 days.

Your standing with every village, the Syndicate, the Venator and the feudal houses is on the ninja world panel (bottom bar), along with your sworn village and the truce countdown.

Hunter-nin

After you leave a village, it sends hunter-nin after your missing-nin: the first hunt comes 5 to 10 days after leaving, then one every 8 to 15 days while any colonist is still marked missing-nin. Each hunt is a small elite squad that attacks at once from the map edge, with a letter naming who they've come for. Hunters come even during the truce. If the village wasn't hostile to you, it turns hostile for that hunt and goes back to what goodwill says two days later. The hunts stop when nobody is missing-nin any more or the village is gone.

Venator

Call a Venator base and you can hire monster hunters for 600 silver: a hunting party arrives to fight beside you.

Scroll merchants

The six hidden villages now send scroll merchant caravans. They sell three to six written technique scrolls from D to B rank, a technique scroll or two, and they buy scrolls. Venator bases also stock a few written scrolls.

Village contracts

Every couple of weeks (from day 10, at least 15 days apart) your sworn village, or the friendliest village at goodwill 20 or more, may offer a contract by letter. You can accept, decline or postpone; the offer lapses after two days.

  • Guard a caravan (700 silver): the village's trade caravan arrives, and an hour or three later it's ambushed by a faction hostile to both of you. It fails if more than half the caravan dies.
  • Hunt a beast (900 silver): a dangerous predator (cave bear, sabre-tooth cat, manticore, giant komodo, winter wolf, magma wrath wolf, cave lion, chupacabra, giant scorpion or leucrotta) comes for your colony. Kill it within six days.
  • Escort an envoy (600 silver): a member of the village stays for three days, and there's an even chance of an ambush meanwhile. It fails if the envoy dies (goodwill −10).

On success the silver and a D to B rank technique scroll are brought by a runner, plus +8 goodwill (+12 if you're sworn to that village). A failed contract costs 5 goodwill.

Festivals

From the fourth day of summer, fall and winter, your sworn village (or the friendliest village that isn't hostile) invites you to a festival: the lantern festival in summer, the harvest festival in fall (with festival drums) and the new year festival in winter, once each a year. Every colonist gets a good mood for three days (+6, +7 and +6), goodwill with the host rises (+3, or +5 if you're sworn to it), and the colony holds a party if it can. There's no spring festival.
