Short answers to the questions players ask most, with links to the full guide.
In short
Quick answers: what to install, how a colonist becomes a ninja, how to learn techniques and elements, where the rare arts come from, why villages attack, how standing and permits work, playing without guns, children and clans, and how to report a bug.
Starting out
- What do I need? Harmony, Taran Magic Framework and World of Naruto, loaded in that order before NFRP World. Giddy-Up is recommended for riding. RimWorld 1.6 or 1.7. See Getting started.
- Do I need the DLCs? No. Some parts use them when they're there: village standing and permits need Royalty, the academy and children's inheritance need Biotech, ninja ideoligion rituals need Ideology, and the Odyssey biomes get our creatures and herbs.
- Can I add it to an existing save? Yes. Factions missing from an old world are added when you load it.
- Which scenario should I pick? The Founding for a normal start, The Founding: two masters for an easy one, The Missing-nin for a hard one. See Scenarios.
Ninja
- Why can't my colonist use techniques? They have no Chakra trait. Clan genes, ninja backstories and village ninja have it; children awaken it in the academy, adults with a sensei at the chakra study apparatus. See Becoming a ninja.
- What is the ninja build? A choice every colonist makes once (from age 6): which kinds of trees they may enter and which go to S rank. See Ninja builds.
- How do I learn techniques? With technique points as the class levels up, from technique scrolls (missions, villages, merchants), from written scrolls a scribe copies from another ninja, and with a sensei. See Ranks.
- Why won't my ninja read this scroll? Usually one of: the technique needs a higher class level; it doesn't fit the build; it is an element the ninja doesn't have (a written element scroll needs that element); or they already know it. The scroll's button says which.
- How does a ninja get an element? From a gene: element genes and many clan genes. A ninja with none can find a leaning with chakra paper and make it theirs with nature training. See Becoming a ninja.
- Can a ninja learn a second element? Through a gene (born with it, or two clans), or very rarely from a technique scroll (about 1 in 33 opens a new element).
- Can I learn another clan's techniques? Only by carrying the bloodline: born into it, or grafted on by a Medical Specialist (capped at B rank). See Clans and bloodlines.
- How do I rank up? At the rank exam: ninja level, time at the current rank and skills. Genin, chūnin and jōnin are earned there, never bought. See Ranks.
- How do I break a genjutsu? Kai (World of Naruto's technique) tries every two seconds, an ally with Kai can break it for you, and a hard hit can snap the victim out. See Genjutsu schools.
Rare arts and gear
- How do I get the Rasengan, Chidori, Hiraishin, Edo Tensei, Shadow Clone or a summoning contract? Only from a very rare forbidden scroll: landmarks, S- and A-rank mission bonuses, Bingo Book targets and the village archive request. About one or two a game-year. See Rare arts and legendary blades.
- Is there a gene for them? No. No gene, trader, master or scribe teaches a rare art.
- Where are the legendary swords? The four named blades exist once per world, on old battlefields, in sealed temples and clan laboratories, or carried by a Bingo Book target. They can't be forged or bought.
- Where do I get the archive books? They're bought from the Order of the Venator, World of Naruto's ninja traders and the scroll merchant caravans.
The world
- Why do the hidden villages attack me? They're at war with everyone, but leave a new colony alone for its first year (60 days). Goodwill can be won back. See Factions and missions.
- How do I join a village? At goodwill 60, swear to one village from the comms console or field radio (no power needed): cheaper scrolls, more missions, its headband. See Diplomacy.
- What are standing and permits? With Royalty, honor with a village or samurai house earns standing (Friend of the Village up to Honored Elder) and permit points to spend on supplies, squads and the village archive. Missions can pay in honor. See Village standing and permits.
- Can I play without guns? Yes. All our scenarios have no firearms, and the mod setting No firearms in any game does it for any scenario: raiders get bows and blades, traders sell no guns, gun research is hidden. See A world without firearms.
- Can I get rid of the Empire? Royalty always adds it, but the mod setting Keep the Empire out of the ninja world (on in all our scenarios) takes its settlements off the world map and stops its visitors, quests and titles. Village standing and permits keep working. Turning the Mechanoid hive off at world creation removes mechanoid raids too.
- Will a medieval colony be locked out of anything? No. World of Naruto's research and NFRP World's pills, bombs and seals are medieval. Only research above your tech level costs more, as in the base game.
- Where do the new creatures and herbs live? Each in its own biomes, some much rarer than others. The creatures and plants pages list them.
Children and clans (Biotech)
- Are clan genes inherited? Yes, all of them, element genes too. A gene both parents carry always passes on; one parent's gene passes half the time. Grafted bloodlines don't.
- Can a child have two clans? Yes, for example Ryuugan and Nara. Both work.
- What about Uchiha and Hyuuga? The Sharingan, Byakugan and Ryuugan block each other. A child of two eye clans always gets at least one eye; if they inherit both, one stays dormant and can pass to the next generation. See Becoming a ninja.
Fighting
- My technique hurt my own people. Area techniques hit everyone caught in them, allies included, unless the description says otherwise.
- The game slows down in big fights. Mod settings › NFRP World: pick the Performance look preset, or lower the effect cap on the Performance tab. Big fights already draw simpler effects on their own.
Problems
- Something broke. What do I send? A bug report on GitHub with your Player.log, taken before you restart the game. See Reporting bugs for where the log is and the report form.
